Hemorrhoids and anal fissures are two different conditions. Many individuals however find it difficult to distinguish between the two as they have very similar symptoms and require the same treatments. You get hemorrhoids when a vein in the anus becomes swollen and inflamed. If you have a small tear in your anal lining, which is also called as the anoderm, then you will be diagnosed as having an anal fissure. You can be diagnosed as having hemorrhoids without any tears be present in the anal lining, but tears must be present before you can be diagnosed as having an anal fissure.
Typical symptoms for both hemorrhoids and anal fissures include itching in and around the anus, bleeding from the anus, the excretion of pus and severe pain while using the bathroom. Commonly, hemorrhoids and anal fissures are caused by a handful of different factors, including delaying/postponing going to the bathroom. By delaying a bowel movement the stool stays in longer in the rectum resulting in it becoming harder and drier, this in turn makes it more difficult to pass. When finally the hard and dry stool exits the body, it can damage the veins in the rectum and around the anus and also damage the anal lining. Hemorrhoids or anal fissures can develop from sitting on the toilet longer than necessary. This prolonged seating position puts extra pressure on the anus, increasing the likelihood of tearing the anal lining.
Hemorrhoids and anal fissures can also develop when you constantly consume food items that contain stool hardening foods. They can include dairy products, white carbohydrates, and fruits like apples and bananas. To help fight hemorrhoids, you need to taken in foods that are rich in fiber which include whole wheat and bran, that facilitate smoother and regular bowel use. You must also make sure you are drinking enough water, and if necessary increase your fluid intake as this can help you avoid hemorrhoids and anal fissures.
People are also more prone to developing hemorrhoids or anal fissures during certain times in life such as pregnancy and old age. Women who are pregnant carry more weight within their uterus and that adds more pressure on the anal lining. At times, the anal lining may develop inflamed veins or even tear due to this increased pressure. As for men and women who are 60 or older, their anal lining can become weaker and thinner due to age, making it more susceptible to tearing.
As for the treatment of hemorrhoids and anal fissures, there are both medicinal and natural methods. Medicinal options usually include over-the-counter suppositories and emollients that can help soothe the pain and the swelling. For more natural methods, one can take regular baths in a salt solution and wipe the affected area with witch hazel in order to facilitate the healing. For more severe cases of hemorrhoids or anal fissures however, one should consult a doctor to get an accurate diagnosis and obtain more effective treatment.
