Dory boats were named for the fish known as dories. The dory boat is a small, shallow draft boat, about 15 to 22 feet long. It’s a light and versatile boat with high sides, flat bottom and sharp bow and stern. Dory boats are easy to build because of their simple lines and have been used in coastal waters and in the open ocean.

You can get dory boat plans for a lot of those styles on the internet. If you’ve never built a boat before don’t worry to much about it as dory boats are very simple to build. Much simpler than the canoe I built about 45 years ago. You don’t even need to many tools to build your own boat and you porbably have most of them so don’t let that hold you back.
